Turbulent canopy flow in an environmental wind tunnel

Urbanization shifts the population to a large exposure to air pollution in cities. Environmental wind tunnel at the Israeli Institute for Biological Research was established to address some of the key issues related to dispersion of pollutants in cities. A physical model of the problem is called an urban canopy flow. A range of obstacles are placed along the bottom wall of a large scale wind tunnel to mimick the flow inside and above the city.

We work in collaboration with the IIBR to study turbulent dispersion inside a canopy flow using our real time extension for the 3D-PTV method. Ron Shnapp does his Ph.D. combining the Lagrangian particle tracking with the turbulent dispersion modeling. Tomer Ast is working on his M.Sc. thesis addressing the correlations between large and small scales using Particle Image Velocimetry and particularly our open source OpenPIV algorithms.
